ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel

In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ranger Challenge

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

Pershing Rifles

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Cavalier Battalion Triathlon Team

The triathlon team competes against the Navy and Air Force ROTC teams during the military weekend. The events include pull-ups/flex arm hang, pushups, sit-ups, 5k run and 200 meter swim.

Cavalier Battalion Color Guard

The color guard unit consists of cadets and midshipmen from Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC. During each school year cadets the present the national, state, school, and ROTC colors at reviews, formal occasions, and university sporting events.

Mosby’s Rangers

Members of this special training group must pass qualifying standards in physical fitness and technical skills. They pursue outdoor-oriented training such as rappelling at Raven's Roost, land navigation, first aid, and water survival exercises. The Mosby's also plan an extra field training exercise each semester, which in the past has included force-on-force paintball operations.

Cavalier Ranger Challenge Team

Cadets have the opportunity to train and join the Cavalier Battalion's Ranger Challenge team. In October, they compete with the top teams from the brigade's other schools during a weekend competition. This demanding competition with events such as the 10km road march, physical fitness test, and the obstacle course, requires outstanding physical fitness and mental toughness as cadets are pushed to their individual and team limits.
