LTC Charles S. Mitchell

Professor of Military Science

LTC Charles “Chuck” S. Mitchell is from Cleveland Ohio. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Infantry in 1987 upon graduation from the United States Military Academy. He also holds a Master of Science in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His military education includes the Infantry Officers' Basic and Advanced Courses, Ranger School, the Infantry Mortar Platoon Course, Advanced Airborne School, Jungle Warfare Course, Northern Warfare Course, the Combined Arms Staff School, and the Command and General Staff College.

LTC Mitchell has served with numerous types of infantry units. He served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Mortar Platoon Leader in 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1988-91. While at Fort Bragg he participated in Operations Just Cause, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. After completing the Advanced Course he served as Battalion S4 for 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry (Motorized), 199th Separate Infantry Brigade at Fort Lewis Washington during 1992-93. He continued to serve as the S4 when the battalion was reflagged as the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (Light) and conducted a BRAC move to Fort Polk, Louisiana. While at Fort Polk, he commanded Ghost Troop from 1993-95 leading them in one Joint Readiness Training Center rotation as BLUFOR and numerous rotations as OPFOR. He then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta Georgia where he earned a Master of Science degree in 1997. He then was assigned as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at West Point, New York from 1997-99. After completing Command and General Staff College and a short stay as G3 Training 24th Infantry Division, he served as Battalion Executive Officer for 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas during two National Training Center rotations from 2000-02. In 2002 LTC Mitchell arrived at the Combat Maneuver Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany were he was assigned as a Task Force Senior Analyst (Warhog 07T), Deputy Senior Task Force O/C (Warhog 02), and Chief of Operations (Spielmeister 03). He is currently serving as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Southern Mississippi.

LTC Mitchell's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3rnd OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2nd OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (2nd OLC), Expeditionary Force Medal with Arrowhead, Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge with Combat Star, Expert Infantrymen's Badge, and Combat Infantrymen's Badge.

LTC Mitchell is married to the former Shannon Linn of Niceville, Florida. The Mitchell's have two sons; Nathan (6 years), and William (3 year).
