Battalion History

A Proud History-A Bright Future

The University of Richmond ROTC Battalion has been proud to help develop the leaders of tomorrow.

The University of Richmond during World War I

During World War I, several buildings on the campus of the University of Richmond were used as a military hospital.



The University of Richmond during World War II

The UR campus hosted the U.S. Navy’s V-12 flight training program, during World War II.



The Spider Battalion’s first commissioned officers

The Spider Battalion commissioned its first officer in January, 1935.  The first female officer was commissioned in May, 1977.



The Spider Battalion: First 50 Years

During its first 50 years, from 1953 to 2003, the Spider Battalion commissioned over 1,500 second lieutenants. These newly commissioned officers graduated from the University of Richmond, Longwood University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College, and Virginia Union University. The Battalion has alumni in all ranks of the U.S. Army, from Second Lieutenant through Major General.
