LTC Carlino
Professor of Military Science
LTC Carlino was commissioned into the infantry in 1988. He has served in variety of command and staff positions in support of both training and operations in units to include the 101st Airborne Division, the 1st Ranger Battalion, the 1st Cavalry Division and the 1st Armored Division. He has also served as a staff officer with the British Army and as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at USMA. His education includes a BS in Computer Science from USMA, an MA in Philosophy from Tufts University and an MMAS from the Air University.

MAJ Silfies
APMS, Executive Officer
Major Silfies is a native of Pennsylvania. He is a 1984 Army ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate from Gannon University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology. In his first assignment as a lieutenant he spent four years with the 82nd Airborne Division, serving as a Platoon Leader, Company Commander, and Battalion Logistics Officer (S4). As a captain he served in the forward deployed battalion of the 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa, Japan with duty as a Detachment Commander and Battalion Personnel Officer S1. He then returned to train selected captains in the Officer Qualification Course at the Special Warfare Center and School.

MAJ Perrin
APMS, Recruiting Operations Officer
Major Perrin received a commission in the Ordnance Corps upon her graduation from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in 1985. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Psychology. Major Perrin is a graduate of the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the Equal Opportunity Course. Major Perrin’s assignments include Platoon Leader in the Main Support Battalion of the Fourth Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, Staff Officer in the Division Support Command of the Third Armored Division at Frankfurt, Germany, Company Commander of the 101st Maintenance Company at Leominster, Massachusetts, and Maintenance Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, 94th Regional Support Command at Devens, Massachusetts. Major Perrin’s decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medals, Overseas Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

CPT Murray
APMS, Operations and Training Officer
Captain Murray is a member of the NH Army National Guard AGR program. He has a BS from Norwich University, an MBA from Franklin Pierce College and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Computing Technology in Education. CPT Murray has served as an Officer Strength Manager, Regional Training Institute Det. Commander and Recruit Training Co. Commander. He first served in C. Co., 368th CBT EN BN (USAR) and deployed with the unit to Honduras in 1988. He then served in A Co., 304th Rgmt, 76th IN DIV as a Drill Sergeant. He accepted a commission as a U.S. Coast Guard Officer and was a law enforcement OIC in numerous operations and boarding missions. CPT Murray is a member of the National Guard Assn of NH and the U.S., and MENSA. He is an avid writer, author, desktop photographer, and participates in several volunteer activities.

MSG Surratt
Senior Military Instructor & Color Guard NCOIC
MSG Surratt began his assignment at the University of New Hampshire in August, 2004. MSG Surratt entered the U.S. Army on 29 August 1985 and attended M1A1 Abrams Tank OSUT. He has been a career Armor soldier ever since. His assignments include M1A1 Driver, loader, gunner Tank commander, Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Observer controller and First Sergeant. His assignments also include 5/73 armor at Ft. Knox Ky. 1/10th Cavalry at Ft. Knox Ky. ¾ Cavalry in Schweinfurt Germany, 1/81 Armor Ft. Knox Ky, 1/35th Armor in Baumholder German, Operations Group at the National training center and 1/11th Cavalry at Ft. Irwin. MSG Surratt’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4th award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Army Achievement Medal (5th award), NATO Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. MSG Surratt holds an associates degree and is currently pursuing a bachelors degree.

MSG Joseph Hughes
Operations NCO & Ranger Challenge Coach
MSG Joseph Hughes is a career U.S. Army Non-Commissioned Officer who began his assignment at the University of New Hampshire in April, 2004. He serves as the BN Operations NCO, MS III Instructor, and Ranger Challenge Coach. His previous three assignments include: First Sergeant of A/2-11th IN (IOBC), Ft. Benning, GA, HHD/RTB, Detachment First Sergeant, Ft. Benning, GA, Operations Sergeant, HHD/RTB, Ft. Benning, GA. His military education and awards include the First Sergeant Course (Phase 1), Advanced NCO Course, Battle Staff, Air Movement Course, Army ROTC PCC, Ranger, Pathfinder, Jumpmaster, Airborne, Air Assault, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Military Free Fall, and Anti-Terrorism Course. MSG Hughes is also a recipient of the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), Army Commendation Medal (5th award), Army Achievement Medal (5th award). MSG Hughes holds an Associates Degree and is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree.

Ms. Brenda Livengood
Human Resources Assistant
Brenda is the personnel and administrative expert here at UNH Army ROTC. She is responsible for the handling of all cadet records and fielding all technical questions related to the program and military benefits.

Mr. Brian Ellis
Military Supply Technician
Mr. Ellis Graduated from the Whittemore School in 1987 with a BA in economics, He attended Boston University Financial Planners Program from 1989 to 1992. Mr. Ellis began his career as a Unit Administrator for the 324th Data Processing Unit in 1987. From 1987 to 1995 he served as an Auditor in the Internal Review and Audit Compliance Section at the 94th Regional Readiness Command (RRC). From 1995 to 1999 he served as the Operations Budget Analyst for the 94th RRC. Following a 3 year break in service he served as Unit Administrator for the 167th Corp Support Battalion and the 309th Combat Support Hospital. He joined UNH as the Supply Technician in March 2004. Mr. Ellis joined the Army Reserve in April 1981 and an SMP candidate at UNH ROTC. In June 1982 he attended Finance School and became a Finance Specialist assigned to the Directorate of Resource Management, 94th RRC. In 1987 he transferred to Internal Review as the Internal Review NCO. In 1999 he transferred to the 804th Medical Brigade HQ where he served as an executive assistant until he joined the 167th CSB in 2002. He retired in January 2004 from the 309th CSH.

CSM (RET) LaPlante
USM NCOIC & Recruiting Operations
Command Sergeant Major LaPlante, Jr. was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma, from January 1977 to September 1977. He served as a Fire Support Specialist, Armorer, and Career Counselor for B Battery, 1st Battalion, 29th FA from
1978 to 1980 at Fort Carson, Colorado.
In October 1981, he completed the Army Recruiter Course and was assigned as a Field Recruiter to the New Bedford, Massachusetts, Boston Recruiting Battalion. In April 1984, he was the Station Commander of the Fall River Recruiting Station, Fall River, Massachusetts. He became Company Trainer in September 1985 for the Wareham Recruiting Company in Wareham, Massachusetts, and in August 1986 was assigned as Station Commander of the Brockton Recruiting Station, Brockton, Massachusetts.
In August 1987, he became a Guidance Counselor at the Boston Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) before moving into the Senior Operations NCO position at the Boston Recruiting Battalion in December 1989.
In August 1990, he transferred to the San Francisco Recruiting Battalion as the First Sergeant of the Santa Rosa Recruiting Company, Santa Rosa, California. In May 1993, he became Senior Guidance Counselor at the Oakland, California, MEPS. In May 1995, he became First Sergeant of the Gilroy Recruiting Company, Gilroy, California. In December 1995, he became Acting Sergeant Major of the Sacramento Recruiting Battalion, Sacramento, California. In June 1996, he became First Sergeant for the North Bay Recruiting Company, Sacramento Recruiting Battalion. In March 1997, he transferred to the 6th Recruiting Brigade, Fort Baker, California, as Brigade Master Trainer for nine recruiting battalions. He was selected to attend the US Army Sergeant Major Academy, Class 51, at Fort Bliss, Texas, in July 2000.
On June 25, 2001, he assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major of the New England Recruiting Battalion. In January 2004, CSM LaPlante assumed the position of the 6th Recruiting Brigade Command Sergeant Major.
His awards and decorations include the Gold Recruiter Badge with three Star Sapphires, the Recruiter Ring, Glenn E. Morrell Award, Career Counselor Badge, Army Achievement Medal 3rd Award, Army Commendation Medal 3rd Award, the Army Meritorious Service Medal 7th Award, Legion of Merit 2nd Award, National Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development with Numeral #4, Army Service Medal, Army Good Conduct 8th Award, and the Army Superior Unit Citation 2nd Award.
CSM LaPlante is married (for 28 years) and they have two daughters.
