LTC Joseph A. Harvey

Professor of Military Science

LTC Harvey was commissioned in December of 1988 as an Engineer officer from University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  His first assignment was as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader at Camp Eschborn, Germany in the 317th Engineer Battalion   where he deployed to Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  He then was assigned as the Executive Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 317th Engineer Battalion, moving the unit from Germany to Fort Benning, Georgia.  In January 1992, he served in the 43rd Engineer Battalion as the S-2.  In May 1993, LTC Harvey left active duty and joined the Reserves.  In January 1995, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 340th Infantry Regiment in Louisville, Kentucky as a Platoon Leader/Observer Controller.  In May 2000, LTC Harvey was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 397th Cavalry in Lexington, Kentucky where he served as Alpha Troop Commander and the S-3. In May 2002, LTC Harvey rejoined the active ranks and was assigned to 3rd Army HQ in Fort McPherson as a Facilities and Construction Officer, deploying to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 2 (OEF 2).  In June 2004, he was assigned to Army Support Group – Qatar in Doha, Qatar as the Deputy Commanding Officer and the Director of Public Works.  LTC Harvey was assigned to the 555 Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington in June 2007 as the Deputy Brigade Commander and deployed to Joint Base Balad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 8-10 (OIF 8-10) as the Brigade Facilities and Basing Officer.   In April 2009, LTC Harvey was selected to command the Forged Gold Battalion as the Department Chair and the Professor of Military Science (PMS) at the University of California, Davis.

Schooling:  LTC Harvey holds a BS in Marketing and a Minor in Military Science from University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  He also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Regis University.  In the military, he is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Awards and Decorations:  LTC Harvey has earned the following military awards:  Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, The Global War on Terror Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), the  Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Parachutist Badge.

Kurt Walling joined the Army in 1987 right after graduating from Eureka High School in Humboldt County.  He served as a paratrooper in Italy, Iraq and Alaska, and as a Combat Engineer in Missouri and New York.  His last duty assignment before retiring in October of 2008 was at the United States Military Academy at West Point where he worked for four years teaching, coaching and mentoring cadets.  Following retirement, he was excited to find a position with the Army ROTC that essentially allowed him to do the same thing at a civilian university.  He holds an AA in Education from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, a BS in Business Administration, a MS in Public Policy Administration from the University of Missouri, St. Louis and a MS in Leadership Development and Counseling from Long Island University.

SFC Frederic Lau graduated from Cornwall HS (NY) in 1985 and enlisted in the Army as an Armor Crewman. He attended his basic training in Fort Knox, KY where he was first introduced to some of the friendliest people he ever met, commonly referred to as “Drill Sergeants”. Over the last 23 years, he has served in many great army divisions such as the 8th Infantry, the 1st Armored , the 1st Cavalry, and most recently, the 1st Infantry Division, which was forward based in Europe. While serving in the 1st Infantry Division, he deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His assignments include Armor Crewman, Tank Commander on the M1A1 Main Battle Tank, Squadron Master Gunner for the 1st Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry, Military Liaison to the Iraqi Army, and most recently, a Tank Platoon Sergeant with the 1st Battalion , 77th Armor Regiment, which played a large role in restoring peace and stability to the war-torn city of Ramadi. During his time in the Army, he has attended basic and advanced leadership courses, the M1A1 Master Gunner Course, the Army Battle Staff Course, the Army Recruiter Course and the Combat Lifesaver Course. During his off duty time, he has managed to complete his Associate in Arts Degree from the University of Maryland. In July of 2008, he was assigned to UC Davis as a Military Science Instructor and Operations Sergeant. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with the students of UC Davis in order to contribute to the development of future leaders for our great Nation. His hobbies include traveling to different parts of the world, seeing historical and cultural sites, and meeting people. He also enjoys watching and participating in indoor and outdoor sports and activities, and is an avid NY Giants fan. He met his wife, Esin, in 1989, and they were married in Haderslev, Denmark. They have three children: Calvin, Orya, and Elzem, who are all students in the Davis School System.

Mr. Barzo

Management Services Officer

Steve Barzo entered the Army in June 1963.  His assignments where 8th Log Comd, Italy, HQ MACV and 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, Walter Reed Army Medical Center,  ROTC assignments at UC Davis and Washington State University.  His last assignment was Recruiting First Sergeant for the Sacramento Recruiting Company, retired in April l984.   After retiring from the Army he went to work for ROTC at UC Davis in September 1984 and has been working here since that time as the Management Services Officer.  He is currently a Planning Commissioner for the City of Woodland and has held the position for the past 10 years, 3 as the Chairman.

I was born in Sacramento and attended Rio Linda High School. I took a job as an aircraft mechanic at McClellan AFB.When I turned 18. I worked on A7, A10, F15, KC 135 and F111 Aircrafts.. My work included working on the fuel tanks and other aircraft systems to include bead blasting and chemically stripping the interiors so that necessary repairs could be conducted. I worked at McClellan AFB in this capacity from 1988 until 1996 when base closures came into effect and jobs began being relocated. In 1996, I moved into supply as a GS7, but still worked at McClellan, working in transportation and basic supply. I held this job until 1999 when increased base closures forced me to once again obtain a new job. During this time I was accepted to the California Correctional Officers Academy with an assignment to Folsom Prison in Folsom, and began my education to work in that field but the same year I was also placed in the Priority Placement Program and offered a job with the Defense Commissary Agency at McClellan. I worked in this capacity from 1999 until 2005, at which time, due to more base closures and force reductions, I came to work at the University of California Davis, Department of Military Science for Army ROTC. I have worked as a Federal government employee for 19 years and plan to retire from my position at retirement age. I live with my wife, Malissa, and three children in Rio Linda.

Stacey Sheehan was born in Petaluma, CA, and is an alumnus of University of California, Davis.  She graduated with a degree in English, emphasizing creative writing and teaching.  She plans to never use this degree to teach.  She has been a member of the staff at UCD Army ROTC for 2 years.

Mrs. Thomas

Security Specialist

Mrs. Robin Thomas attended Woodland High School and Chico State University.  After attending college, Mrs. Thomas entered the United States Army as a Tactical Microwave Satellite Radio Operator for a three year tour.  After her tour with the US Army, Mrs. Thomas worked for FM-102 radio for 7 years working with the media.  Mrs. Thomas has worked for the University of California, Davis going on 20+ years.  She has worked in several departments on campus.  She currently has worked for the Military Science Department for 11+ years.  She enjoys working with the cadets/students at Davis.  Her hobbies include cooking, shopping, golfing and vacationing in Bodega Bay with her family and husband.








Mrs. Kubasak

Department Administrative Assistant CSUS

Mrs. Kubasak was born and raised in Southern California.  She graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Social Science and later received a California elementary teaching credential.  She taught in elementary schools in both Northern and Southern California until the first of her three children was born.  She, her husband and their children moved to Sacramento from Southern California in 1981 and have been here ever since.  One of her favorite hobbies is quilting.

She has worked at CSUS since 2005 and ROTC since 2007.  She feels honored to follow in her father’s footsteps (WWII veteran) and serve the military in some capacity.








Mr. Kubitz

Human Resources Assistant CSUS

Mr. Kubitz was born at Ft. Lee, Virginia and traveled extensively as an "Air Force brat".  He attended first grade in England and second grade in France.  He was active duty Army for five years and in the Army Reserves for 19 years.  His duty stations were Ft. Hood, Texas, Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, and Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, Denver, Colorado.  Mr. Kubitz graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering.  He has worked as a biomedical equipment technician, health services maintenance technician, hardware design engineer, and information technology specialist.  He is married with two children and enjoys tennis, adult baseball, movies, and traveling.
