Battalion History

A Proud History-A Bright Future

The University of California, Berkeley ROTC Battalion has been proud to help develop the leaders of tomorrow.

The Golden Bear Battalion at Cal

The Golden Bear Battalion has produced fine Army Officers since 1870. The Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) is a unique elective course of study, taken in conjunction with any academic major that, upon graduation, leads to a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Today, we at the Golden Bear Battalion continue that tradition of excellence through a rigorous and highly supportive program centered around the development of Scholars, Athletes, and Leaders.

Army ROTC at the University of California, Berkeley

Berkeley ROTC graduates have risen to the highest honors and service to the nation. Major General William F. Dean (class of '22) as a general officer was awarded the Medal of Honor. Former Secretary of Defense and World Bank President Robert McNamara participated in ROTC and became an officer in the Army Air Corps after graduating. Past Army Chief of Staff Frederick Weyand and Chief, Army Reserve, William R. Berkman are both Berkeley graduates. In all, Army ROTC at UCB has produced 17 general officers and thousands of captains of industry.
