“As a cadet, there are a lot of fun events to participate in. We have Field Training Exercises as well as our Winter Adventure Lab and Military Ball. These events teach the importance of leadership and tradition while allowing us to have a good time.”

ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel

In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ranger Challenge

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

Pershing Rifles

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Military Ball & Dining In

Every year, there are two formal dinners, called the Dining-In and Military Ball. During these events, the Cadet Battalion enjoys a several course meal in Class A uniforms where they can socialize and share dinner with the Cadre and a distinguished speaker. These dinners are usually held at an Officer's Club at one of the many Bay Area military installations or a local dining hall. These two special events offer the Cadet Corps an opportunity to engage in this tradition of the Army life. In recent years, military balls have become joint-service engagements providing a chance for The Golden Bear Battalion to meet and greet with the other uniformed military services.

Cal Day

Every year UC Berkeley hosts an open house (around the third Saturday in April) called Cal Day. Traditionally, Army ROTC cadets and cadre have sponsored a free rappel clinic and demonstration in front of Wheeler Hall. It is a great opportunity for cadets to share their knowledge and training with the public.

Tri-Services Sports Competition

During the spring semester, the three service ROTC programs at UC Berkeley compete against each other in various sports competitions for the coveted Brass Boot. We have won the cup for the last two years and are the defending champs for this semester's competition.

Ranger Challenge

Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for Army ROTC programs from California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona to compete with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.
