| ROTC is not like another class in college, it is more of a tool than a class because it helps to build a persons leadership, confidence, and the motivation to be the best. Each semester ROTC gives awards to the cadets that strive to go above and beyond the average college student such as academic awards, physical fitness awards, and awards for being in other organizations. There is a healthy competition within ROTC to try to be the best, because nobody wants to be last and everyone is running for first. There is no other college organization that has the same bond as the Reserve Officer Training Corps. During the freshman year of ROTC, or Military Science I(MSI), all the higher level cadets show the newcomers about the rules and regulations of ROTC and the military. Teaching new cadets how to wear the uniform properly, the chain of command, and learning basic Drill and Ceremony are some of the basics that will be learned. Also, cadets are introduced to the physical training portion of the program. There is no other program where you have people working out with you on the same level, showing you how to perform each exercise, and you receive all of this for free. ROTC also has a few different teams that are formed during the year such as Color Guard, Ranger Challenge, Saber Team, and much more. As a cadet progresses through the years of learning the basic skills needed to complete the course, classes begin to become much more advanced. Begin learning skills such as how to move a formation of people on the battlefield, and how to give commands without actually speaking to each other, and how to work together with people from other schools that are on the same level. For the cadets that are striving to be the best there are special programs that will set them above everyone else. There are schools that are offered during the summer for cadets that would like to go and experience something new. For example, Airborne school is a great learning experience that will teach the basics of how to jump from an airplane using a parachute. There is also Air Assault School that teaches people about helicopters and what they can do, what type of equipment and personnel they can carry, and you also have the chance to rappel from them. Not many people get to experience these types of programs, but ROTC bundles it all into one big fun organization. |
