CDT David Sergeant map reads his way through a written land navigation test given at Ft. Pickett, VA.
“My main goal in joining Army ROTC is to strengthen myself and overcome my weaknesses. By becoming an Army officer, I hope to gain the strength of having enough self confidence to take charge and take the correct action in any situation.”

Events and Activities

ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel

In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ranger Challenge

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

Pershing Rifles

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Military Ball

The Military Ball was initiated after the end of World War II. The Ball became one the highlights of the Spring social season and by 1955 was "the most popular and long-awaited dance of the year. " The Ball continues today as one of the highlights of the school year at NC State University.  The Military Ball is a social event held by NCSU Army ROTC program each Spring semester to promote social skills in our cadets. The ball includes a formal dinner, traditional military ceremony, and dancing.

Commissioning Ceremonies

Each semester we conduct two commissioning ceremonies – the Joint Commissioning ceremony which is the formal swearing in ceremony for all branches of service, where each newly-commissioned Lieutenant is administered the oath of office by a general officer and receives their official commissioning certificate. The pre-commissioning ceremony is an intimate and personal ceremony given by NCSU Army ROTC program. The purpose of this ceremony is for each commissionee to receive their oath of office from the officer of their choosing, conduct the “pinning of the bars” and the coveted first salute. We strongly encourage family and friends, as well as the commissionees, to share any comments or remarks with us during this time.
