| A New VP for the COAS ~ by C/SGT Shave Gardiner |
| On Wednesday March 4, 2009, our very own C/MAJ Llewingtina King was elected to Howard’s College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) Student Council as Executive Vice President. C/MAJ King is currently a COAS Political Science Major, Honors B.A. Candidate 2010, and serves on the COAS Student Council as Executive Secretary. She aspires to attend law school after completion of her undergraduate degree. With her busy schedule of being the Cadet Executive Officer of our Bison Battalion, studying for classes and enjoying some free time with her friend, she was recently questioned about the campaign season and these were her responses: Q. How did you balance campaign life, ROTC, and classes? A. It wasn’t easy. I was constantly moving. I was either studying, campaigning or working on my squad STX knowledge. However, the key thing that helped me focus was knowing that sleep was no longer a priority but a privilege and every minute I spent sleeping would be a vote or a moment I could be studying or reviewing information for LDAC. Q. Did you have free time for yourself? A. NO!!!!!!!!! I never had time for myself, but I made time and disappeared to NYC for a night because I was OVERWHELMED to the point that I wanted to get rid of my Blackberry. Q. What leadership qualities that you learned in ROTC helped you run a successful campaign? A. I think the leadership values helped push me through the campaign. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage all worked hand in hand. Some days I wanted to give up because campaigning wasn’t working, but my duty as a student leader is to not give up when times get rough but to find a solution for every problem that arises. Even in the speak outs I had to express some of the values taught by ROTC, especially when they got tense. If anything being a part of ROTC has prepared me for the next step in my life. I can only imagine what one more year in the program plus my time in the military can do for me as a person. Q. What are your goals that you want to accomplish as executive vice president for COAS? A. As the vice president of COAS I want to change focus from traditional programming which is supposed to be a USGA duty and change it back to advocating for the students. Our environment, particularly our classrooms, is mediocre, if that. I want to work on having programs that not only academically but professionally prepare COAS students for the professional world. I want to do what my agenda says and that’s advocating for students, renovating success, and enhancing the community around Howard University. We here at Howard University Bison Battalion are proud of C/MAJ King. Keep up the good work!” |
