Battalion History

A Proud History-A Bright Future

The Gannon University ROTC Battalion has been proud to help develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Establishment of the ROTC Program

The ROTC program was established at Gannon University in the fall of 1948 with the mission of commissioning the future leadership in the U.S. Army.  The first gradfuation class of cadets, which consisted entirely of veterans, was commissioned in 1950.

Evolution of Program

Gannon University required that the ROTC course be mandatory for all physically and mentally fit students.  In 1969 the  ROTC course became an elective for  freshmen and sophomore students.  When Gannon began admitting women, the first enrolled in 1973.

Gannon ROTC Partnerships

Beginning in 1970, the Military Science Department initiated cross enrollment with other Erie area colleges.  Offices were established with Edinboro University, Allegheny College, Mercyhurst College, and Penn State Erie - the Behrend College.

The Pride of Pennsylvania Battalion Today

The Battalion continues its mission today by  hosting the program at Gannon University and partnering with Penn State- Erie, and Mercyhurst College.  In  total over 1050 cadets have been commissioned with 8 rising to the rank of General.
