ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel
In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities
for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety
of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.
Ranger Challenge
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other
completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets
test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises.
Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.
Pershing Rifles
The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity
to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision
trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of
leadership, military bearing and discipline.
Commissioning ceremony
Each spring several cadets are commissioned into the United States Army during ceremonies held on each campus. Families, friends, University Presidents and other distinguished guests take part in the commissioning as well as other ceremonial activities.
ROTC Lab
Every Thursday the ROTC program has its weekly lab session. The lab consists of training in various areas. For instance, training is focused on land navigation techniques such as pace count and compass, with the next lab consisting of the actual practicality of land navigation. Another such lab was one in which cadets got to handle M16 rifles. Also, helicopters have been brought to campus to familiarize cadets with helicopter operations and procedures.
Military Ball
Each spring, the ROTC program hosts a military ball for the entire battalion. The ball usually consists of a few ceremonies, dinner, a guest speaker, slide shows and dancing. The military ball celebrates all of the hard work the cadets have put in throughout the school year. It is also a sort of “good-bye” to the senior ROTC cadets who will be graduating and commissioning that spring.
