| “The Fighting Mustangs Battalion offers numerous training opportunities and leisure activities. Some activities are open to the public and others are only available to those contracted in ROTC. Cadets begin mornings with physical training, which helps them build a strong physical foundation. Cadets also participate in labs once a week, and apply classroom knowledge to a field environment. Field training exercises take place once a quarter, where the Fighting Mustangs meet with cadets from other colleges and practice a variety of field exercises. Competitions, such as Ranger Challenge, are opportunities for cadets to use what skills they have acquired to compete as a team against other schools in the region. Commissioning, the ultimate goal of all cadets, is a ceremony in which a cadet becomes an officer and begins his military career.” |

ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel
In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities
for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety
of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ranger Challenge
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other
completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets
test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises.
Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

Pershing Rifles
The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity
to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision
trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of
leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Ranger Challenge
Ranger Challenge is a great team building competition. It brings out the
best in a person, and pushes you past what you ever imagined you could do. In
the past, Cal Poly has done well, winning the competition in 2000, scoring in
the top third in subsequent years, and last year scoring middle third. Cal
Poly’s RC team is respected and always a worthy opponent. RC takes up little
more time than normal ROTC activities. PT is done one hour per day, five days a
week compared to Battalion three days per week, with an additional ruck march
and rope bridge practice on Saturday mornings. Regular lab attendance of two
hours per week is required. Workouts are more challenging and much more
rewarding, both physically and mentally.
