Due to close participation with neighboring National Guard units, Boston University often has the opportunity to use resources that it otherwise would not have. Here, a Blackhawk helicopter comes in for a landing, to be used in aviation familiarization training by the BU cadets.

LTC Michael Lee

Professor of Military Science

LTC Lee assumed command of the Charles River Battalion in 2004.  He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, and attended the Signal Officer Basic Course.  Among many other accomplishments, he served in Desert Storm with the Second Armored Division, Commanded Alpha Company of the 82nd Signal Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 82nd Airborne Division.  His Awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Ranger Tab, and the Master Parachutist Badge.

MAJ Brandon Russell

Assistant Professor of Military Science/Operations Officer

MAJ Russell arrived as the Charles River Battalion Operations Officer in 2006.  He is a 1997 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.  He is an Army Aviator rated in the CH-47D (Chinook).  MAJ Russell has spent a significant amount of his career in Army Air Traffic Control.  He commanded Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom II and was responsible for all Army Air Traffic Services in Northern Iraq.  Prior to assuming command, MAJ Russell completed the Military Intelligence Officer Transition and Military Intelligence Captain Career courses.  Among other awards, MAJ Russell is the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Award of the Order of St. Michael, and the Boeing Rescue Pin.  He is a graduate of Airborne school, Air Assault school, the Joint Firepower Control Course, and the Joint Aerospace Command and Control Course.  He is married the former Jeneil Palmer and is daddy to his daughters, Rhema Amelia and Hope HannaRuth.

MSG Charles Kottmyer

Senior Non-Commissioned Officer

MSG Kottmyer arrived at the Charles River Battalion in 2007. He was previously the training NCO at East Carolina University Army ROTC until 2003. He is a Combat Engineer who has deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the First Sergeant of B Co, 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Division: first from December 2003 to July 2004, and again from January 2006 to February 2007. Among other awards, MSG Kottmyer has recieved the Bronze DeFlory Medal, the Abry E. Newman Award, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. In addition to Technical Degrees in Computer Repair and Computer Programming, he is currently working on a Bachelor's Degree in Art History with a minor in History. He and his wife, the former Stefanie Rich, have two children.
